What exactly is an underground water leak, and why should I care?
Every home connected to Auckland’s town water supply has a water meter near the street and an underground water main that supplies fresh water to your home.
In many Auckland properties, the water main shares the same trench as the underground power cable and is typically buried around 600 mm below ground. Over time, water pipes can deteriorate through age, ground movement, or years of pressure from rocks against the pipe. Eventually, a small leak can develop.
Because these leaks are underground, they often go unnoticed until you receive an unusually high Watercare water bill, notice your water meter continues spinning when no taps are running, or discover a wet patch in your lawn or driveway.

Why Accurate Leak Detection Matters
While there is a cost to professionally detecting a leak, the greatest expense is often the repair work that follows if the leak hasn’t been accurately located. Every extra square metre of driveway, concrete, paving, lawn, or landscaping that is unnecessarily excavated has to be repaired or reinstated, adding significantly to the overall cost.
Water doesn’t always appear directly above the leak. It often travels along the pipe trench or follows the path of least resistance before reaching the surface. As a result, the wet area you can see may be several metres away from the actual leak.

Why Do Underground Water Mains Leak?
Underground water mains can last for many decades, but no pipe lasts forever. Over time, a combination of age, ground movement, installation conditions, and external forces can eventually lead to a leak.

- Ageing pipework reaching the end of its service life.
- Rocks or hard objects bearing against the pipe over many years.
- Ground movement caused by seasonal changes, tree roots, or nearby excavation.

While many water services are installed to a high standard, some older pipes were laid directly into the trench with little protection from rocks or other hard materials. Water mains are often installed close together within a shared trench, making repairs more complex if the leaking pipe is buried beneath several other services. In these situations, accurately locating the leak before excavation becomes even more valuable, helping to minimise disruption and avoid unnecessary work.

How We Locate Underground Water Leaks
Finding an underground water leak isn’t simply a matter of listening for running water. Every property is different, and the best detection method depends on the type of pipe, the amount of water being lost, the depth of the pipe, surrounding ground conditions and even nearby traffic or background noise.
We begin by understanding the water supply system and confirming that the leak is on the underground water main. From there, we select the most suitable detection equipment for the conditions rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach.
For many leaks, our advanced acoustic listening equipment can detect the sound of water escaping from a buried pipe. Where the route of the water main is unknown, our Radiodetection tracing equipment allows us to accurately trace the pipe and determine its depth, dramatically reducing the area that needs to be searched.
For the most difficult leaks, we also use the Ferret Leak Locator. Unlike traditional acoustic methods, the Ferret travels inside the water pipe and pinpoints the leak from within. This allows us to locate many leaks that would otherwise be extremely difficult to find, particularly on long rural water supplies, plastic pipework and sites with significant background noise.
