Herne Bay

This was a particularly complex leak detection project involving a 100 m shared driveway servicing seven townhouses. With multiple underground services throughout the corridor, traditional detection methods were significantly compromised.
The leak flow rate was measured at 3.3 L/min, equating to approximately 4,750 litres per day and over 33,000 litres per week.

Compounding the issue, nearby construction activity and motorway noise rendered acoustic detection ineffective. Two prior detection attempts using acoustic methods had already failed, leaving the body corporate facing the prospect of costly, large-scale excavation.

We deployed the Ferret Leak Locator to isolate the problem systematically.

  • The water meter was removed and the first 50 metres of the watermain was pressure tested (maximum Ferret test length).
  • No pressure drop was detected, confidently ruling out this section.
  • Testing was then conducted from the house entry point.

This process allowed us to pinpoint the leak to within 3 meters of the dwelling, avoiding unnecessary excavation along the full driveway.

Blockhouse Bay

This project mirrored the challenges of our recent Herne Bay job, involving an 80 meter shared driveway servicing nine properties, with the affected property located second from the end.
Acoustic detection was not viable due to intense rock-breaking construction in the adjacent street, which made accurate listening impossible. Given the conditions, we proceeded directly with the Ferret Leak Locator.

Accessing the watermain presented its own challenge, with all nine connections tightly grouped in a confined area. After careful excavation and identification, we successfully connected the Ferret system and began testing.

The leak was pinpointed 33 m along the line, located precisely on the edge of the driveway.

Outcome:
The leak was accurately located without the need for concrete cutting, resulting in minimal disruption and a very relieved property owner.

henderson

We were engaged after an acoustic detection company was unable to locate this leak due to its low flow rate and minimal noise signature.
The site consisted of a 30 m driveway, with the watermain running along the right-hand side before turning at a 90° elbow at the 20 m mark,

then continuing beneath the concrete driveway to the front of the garage.

Using the Ferret Leak Locator, we approached the problem methodically:

  • The first 20 m (up to the elbow) was pressure tested — no pressure loss was detected, confirming this section was sound.
  • Testing was then carried out from the house side, back under the concrete driveway.

The leak was pinpointed 1.5 m beneath the driveway, just before the 90° elbow.

Solution:
Rather than excavating the concrete driveway, we utilised the existing watermain as a conduit and installed a new, smaller pipe through the line from the elbow to the house.

Outcome:
The leak was resolved without any concrete cutting or major disruption. The homeowner was extremely relieved, as the ongoing issue had been causing significant stress and uncertainty.

Onehunga

This project involved a single dwelling with a very low-flow leak, measured at 1.26 L/min (approximately 75 L/hr or 1,814 litres per day). While minor in volume, leaks of this size are typically difficult to detect using conventional acoustic methods.
A brief acoustic survey was

carried out; however, as expected, the leak could not be reliably detected due to its low noise profile and ongoing renovation activity on site.

We proceeded with the Ferret Leak Locator and tested the line in stages:

  • The first 14 m of pipework was tested — no pressure loss, confirming this section was sound.
  • Testing was extended to 30 m, still with no indication of a leak.
  • The Ferret head was then advanced to approximately 33 m (end of the line), where a leak was confirmed within that final section.

By working back methodically, we were able to pinpoint the leak at approximately the 28 meter mark, located beneath a deck.

Outcome:
The leak was accurately located within a tight range, allowing for a simple, targeted excavation and repair, with minimal disruption to the property.
