Acoustic Leak Detection
Acoustic leak detection uses sensitive ground microphones to listen for the sound created as pressurised water escapes from an underground pipe.
By tracing the water main and comparing the sound at different points, we can often narrow the leak down to a small area before any excavation begins. This method is generally most effective on active leaks of around 3 litres per minute or more, although results depend on pipe material, burial depth, ground conditions and surrounding noise.
Acoustic detection is often the first method we use because it is fast, non-invasive and highly effective in suitable conditions. Where the leak is too quiet, the ground absorbs the sound, or background noise makes the result uncertain, we can use additional locating methods such as electronic pipe tracing or the Ferret Leak Locating System.
Radiodetection Tracing
Using specialist radio detection equipment, we can accurately trace the route of an underground water main and determine its depth before excavation begins.
By introducing either a tracing cable or our Ferret transmitter into the pipe, we can follow the exact path of the water main, even when its location is unknown. This allows us to avoid unnecessary digging, identify changes in direction and accurately mark the pipe’s position on the ground.
Radio detection is particularly valuable when combined with acoustic leak detection, ensuring we are listening directly above the pipe and helping to pinpoint the leak as accurately as possible.
Ferret Leak Locator
The Ferret Leak Locating System is one of the most advanced methods available for locating difficult underground water leaks. By travelling inside the water main, it accurately traces the pipe’s route and pinpoints the location of hidden leaks that conventional methods can struggle to find.
Unlike acoustic leak detection, which relies on listening for the sound of escaping water, the Ferret works from within the pipe itself. This makes it particularly effective on long water mains, non-metallic pipes, shared driveways and noisy environments where acoustic signals may be weak or masked.
